Sleeping up to 4 guests, The Villiers is perfect for family getaways or city breaks with friends. Throughout the past 310 years, nestled under the watchful gaze of Durham Cathedral, many esteemed guests (including Her Majesty The Queen) have enjoyed the timeless elegance of 52 Old Elvet and revelled in its unparalleled history.

The Space

Within The Villiers, you will find a large and light open plan living room overlooking the street. With a marble fireplace at one end, and a fully equipped, dove grey, Shaker-style kitchen with granite worktops and island at the other - it's a magnificent space. There are two spacious bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, tiled in neutral shades of stone along with a fantastic walk-in wet room, unique to this apartment. If you are looking for a stylish stay in Durham, The Villiers is a great option for you.

Neighbourhood

Named as ‘One of the Best Cities to Visit in recent years’, Durham is a beautiful and charming area within the North East. Known as the ‘perfect little city’, Durham has the best mix of everything and it all blends seamlessly. It retains its medieval heritage but it also has a modern and vibrant twist. It boasts lush green landscapes but it also has busy cobbled streets with independent shops, bars and restaurants. Durham has plenty of history within its walls. One of the most spectacular historic sites is Durham Cathedral. Constructed between 1903 and 1133, this towering building is a shining example of Norman architecture. The cathedral is now the oldest surviving building with a stone vaulted ceiling of such a large scale.

Getting Around

52 Old Elvet is located in the city centre with cafes, restaurants, shops and bars right on the doorstep. Durham train station is a 15-minute walk from the apartment so nearby towns and cities can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station. There are plenty of bus routes throughout Durham. Hop on the Arriva 6 route to visit Barnard Castle or the number 22 which travels through Seaham and Sunderland.

Location was really close to the city so we were able to walk everywhere. Property was very clean. Office very responsive when we had to contact them. Documents for check in were sent via a link which was difficult to access in a poor connection area so a PDF that we could have printed at home would have been easier. However, the office were very responsive when we called them as we couldn't work out how the apartment keypad worked. There was no area to eat as the stools for the breakfast bar have been removed since the publicity photos were taken. Despite having 8 dinner plates, 8 side plates and 8 dishes, there were only 2 mugs which was the crockery we used the most! Grateful for the previous reviewer who advised there was no dishcloth/scourer which tipped us off to take our own. There was a tea towel provided at the property.

Great location with parking which was invaluable. The apartment was clean and modern and the beds were very comfortable. There was no hot water on our final morning so we were unable to shower and had to boil the kettle to wash our breakfast pots. I did report this but as yet have not had any feedback. There wasn’t a user guide for the television which just gave the message ‘no signal’ when we tried to view as a guest.
