Middle Farmhouse is postcard perfect. With a quaint and charming feel, this stunning Grade II listed building is bound to impress. Recently refurbished to the highest standard, the interiors have been carefully curated to create a seriously stylish space. Upon entering the living room, you’ll feel at home at once. The luxury, velvet sofas frame the room perfectly making it the ideal place to enjoy quality time with friends and family. Subtle artwork adorns the walls and black metal furniture adds an attractive contrast. A large, flat screen TV sits above the wooden fireplace so you can catch up on your favourite shows after a long day of exploring North Yorkshire. The kitchen / dining area is light and airy. Modern appliances work perfectly with the countryside style and the house retains its charm with beautiful exposed beams and white windows. You’ll have everything you need for a stay in Lythe as the kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, fridge freezer, oven, washing machine, microwave and toaster. There is even a coffee machine so you can enjoy a fresh, tasty coffee each morning! You can entertain friends and family at the large dining table which Is accompanied with stylish chairs and a bench. All of the bedrooms are comfy and welcoming with elegant furnishings. The clean style is executed flawlessly as the neutral colour palettes are contrasted with pops of jewel colours. Industrial light fixtures and dark wood wardrobes add depth. You’ll wake up feeling well rested after a blissful night’s sleep in any of the comfortable beds at Middle Farmhouse. The bathrooms are modern and bright. One features a large walk in shower and the other is complete with a bath and overhead shower. Outside you’ll find the secret garden. This lush green space is ideal for children to play and dogs to explore.
The small village of Lythe is quaint and relaxed. It is perfectly located on the North Yorkshire coast - just a short 20-minute walk to Sandsend and less than 10-minutes into Whitby by car. Lythe sits on the Cleveland Way so you can uncover a haven of woodland and moorland during your stay. Sandsend sits at the end of almost 3 miles of sandy beach, west along the bay from Whitby. Watch the surfers bob in the distance as you stretch your legs along the shores. Soak up the sea air as you feel the sand beneath your toes. Head into Whitby and explore everything the seaside town has to offer. Visit the infamous Whitby Abbey which went on to inspire Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’. Try the local catch of the day in one of the many fish restaurants, enjoy a drink in a cosy pub and feel nostalgia in the arcades which line Pier Road. You can’t miss the beautiful Blue Flag West Cliff beach which is complete with colourful huts on the promenade.
You can explore Lythe on foot and the coastal village of Sandsend is just a short 20-minute walk away. Hop on the X4 bus from Goldsborough Lane and you can visit beautiful villages like Runswick Bay and Staithes easily with the final stop at Whitby. Whitby train station is around 15-minutes away via car so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.

There is private parking available at the property for up to four vehicles depending on size, and there is also additional free parking nearby.

Sadly there was very little to recommend our stay although the village of Lythe had a great community shop which is well worth a visit . The view from the windows showed a broken garden fence surrounding an ill kept lawn looking out onto a back yard of other cottages. Host and stay provided out of date instructions on where to find the property citing the local pub , the Red Lion as a reference point. The Red Lion pub was renamed The Stiddie before Covid 2020. Every member of our group encountered some issue finding the place . A simple sign in the hedge would have made the experience a lot easier. The booking in time of 4pm was quite late although we were offered an earlier option for a fee and the option of extending the leaving time again for a further fee. This information was offered quite close to our booking when arrangements had already been made although I paid an additional £40 so we could leave later than 10am on our day of departure. Despite this I received an email at 7am on our departure day reminding me to leave by 10am as the housekeeping team would be arriving. When I replied stating I had paid extra to extend our departure I received another reply saying the email was automated . Host & stay have been poor with communication after I submitted a complaint , at one point ghosting me completely and only the threat of legal action prompted them to then reply . They claim to have investigated my complaints , well exceeding their time frame of 7 to 10 days and in admission of guilt have offered 15% off a future stay at a property managed by them. Given my experience I would not want to use them for any future trips . Please read all the issues we encountered and look at the photos of the filthy mattresses and stained pillows On arrival I noticed a large stain on the carpet in the living room. The log burner had a broken brick and only one light in the kitchen was working properly. I reported this immediately to Host & Stay , who replied asking if we required a maintenance team to fix the light. Given we were staying over a weekend I wonder whether anyone would have turned up but I replied saying it would be ok . The cottage was initially very cold but the central heating fired up and it was warm. The towel rails in the bathrooms become dangerously hot and we discovered the oven was not working properly. We tried to access the digital handbook sent by Host and Stay to switch off the towel rails but the tabs would not open and give any access to any information. An old fashioned folder with instructions for the appliances would have been much better. The dishwasher was so worn it was hard to tell which buttons were which to start that. The kitchen was poorly stocked with utensils, we were not able to cook a Sunday lunch and only one tea towel had been provided. Prior to departure we stripped the beds , horrified to find no mattress covers on the single mattresses . This mattresses were badly stained with what looked like blood on one and a huge stain on the other which looked like someone had wet the bed at some point. The mattress in the master bedroom was filthy full of popcorn and crumbs under the sheet. The pillows in this room were also old and stained. I immediately rang Host & Stay and sent photographic evidence . The communications I have received since have come from a different person every time , and the company is trying to wriggle out of their responsibilities under the consumer act of 2015. I am not generally given to complaining , a weed ridden garden and lack of tea towels would not be of issue but the filthy beds along with what I consider to be a health and safety and welfare concern of the unadjustable boiling hot towel rails are major issues.
Very big and spacious, beds all very comfortable No WiFi and was not made aware of this and it did have an impact on our stay
